For twenty five years with counseling and ceremony, Harvard educated theologian Stephen Jenkinson has been guiding individuals, couples, families and communities through all the human sufferings, sorrows and confusions in life.

Formerly a programme director in a major Canadian hospital and assistant professor in a prominent Canadian medical school, now an educator and advocate in the helping professions, spiritual activist and ceremonial man Stephen Jenkinson consults to human service organizations and teaches across North America. He is revolutionizing the way dying and death are understood and practiced in North America.

Jenkinson, a leading Canadian palliative care educator, spiritual activist and author, is taking bookings for his 2010 teaching tour across Canada, the United States and Europe.
Stephen's Orphanwisdom: Griefwalking Teaching Tour distils a dozen years of his clinical counseling, writing, programme development and community education research and teachings. The tour is part critique, part affirmation of core principles, part plea for a community based, culturally informed response to what dying asks of us all. Stephen offers his teachings to professional caregivers in and outside of the medical context, volunteers and administrators, and especially for dying people and their families.

As part of this tour, he will present public screenings of Griefwalker a film by Tim Wilson produced by National Film Board of Canada. This is a feature length documentary and an extraordinary portrait of Stephen's work with dying people. It reveals the cultural and spiritual roots that continue to shape his ideas.
“The Skill of Dying is the same skill as deep living.

I’m trying to teach dying people something of how to
love their dying life”

Orphanwisdom is a teaching house and a learning house for the skills of deep living and making human culture.  It is a redemptive project that comes from where we come from.  It is rooted in knowing history, being claimed by ancestry, working for a time not our own.

THE SKIN OF THE WORLD: Hide tanning workshop by Stephen Jenkinson
The ages-old skills of hide and fur tanning came from a lived understanding of animal ways, and from a hard earned ceremonialized understanding of the place of hunting and food preparation in village and personal life.  These skills are rooted in an always renewed and relearned relationship of human life and animal life, a relationship severed by commercialized, industrialized ways of ‘processing’ animals.
This hands-on workshop will teach the techniques and the deep history of leather tanning.
Note: This is at minimum a two day workshop.  A short list of tools/materials is provided at registration.
Fee: $80 per person or $95 includes lunches & refreshments

6 day - Homecoming: A Master Class in Living and Dying by Stephen Jenkinson
Hollyhock Retreat Centre
The relentless pursuit of self-reliance and self-improvement in our culture is rooted in our lost connection to the common stories, homeland, and ancestors that bind and unite us. The times now ask that we begin to recognize the world’s suffering in our own. Learn how individuals, couples, families and communities cope with human suffering, sorrow and confusion, and what it might look like to live and die well. Use small group work, film study, individual consultation with the teacher, and guidance in prayer and ritual to gain a deeper capacity for personal grief, and for spiritual activism. As we learn to deal with brokenheartedness, we gain the tools to rebuild our communities. When we can see and recognize that life ends, we can be fully alive.

Annual Continuing Education Conference - Keynote Speech and Workshop by Stephen Jenkinson
11:15-12:00-Keynote: Hopeless, Hopeful, Hopefree: What every GP could know about patient centered care and dying people. This keynote address will question some of the central tenets of the current care model governing the medical care of dying people and, using research on patient expectations of physicians, challenge the enduring belief in fostering an uncritically supportive, hope-based relationship in the terminal stage of palliative care.
13:45-14:30-Workshop: Dying Centered Care: What terminally ill people deserve from the health care system.  This workshop will offer participants a model of palliative care which asks both caregivers and patients to pursue dying as the goal of care, and to grow an enduring expertise in dying and what it asks of us all.
